Sawasdeeka, my name is Gale Pong, and I am so honored to be a part of working in America on this first volume. Working in a Thai restaurant is not the only job you can do here. If you can speak English, you can do anything! Give yourself a chance, and please do not limit your ability to do what you can.

Here is a little bit about me.  I was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. I came here with my parents when I was 19 years old. My first job was as a full-time daily department night shift supervisor at Fort Belvoir, which is an army base. I also waited on tables part-time while I was in college. After I graduated from college, I worked for United Airlines as a gate agent, and Chevy Chase Bank as a senior. sales associate, and Strayer University as a senior admissions advisor.

Currently, I am working at my dream job, and I am so proud and happy about what I am doing.  It took a little bit of time to get this job. How did I get it? My friend recommended it to me and I wanted to give it a try and YES I got it… It took a little bit of time, but I am so proud that I went through all the steps that it took to get it.

My job is Senior Background Investigator. I interview the candidates who apply to work with a federal agency or federal contractor for a security clearance. Then I report my findings to the various agencies. I work for different agencies, such as DCSA, DHS, and some other agencies that cannot be named. Lol.  And I am the only Thai in the company. Yup, only one Thai, and of course some people look down on me because of my Asian accent. But who cares? Haha

I have so many people questioning my ability to do my job because I was not born in the U.S. and I’m a female. Those negative racist comments used to bother me, but not anymore. I’m the only Thai-speaking background investigator in my company, and I love my job. 

I would say, Give yourself some options and dream big. 
Do not be afraid or get intimidated easily.
Go for it!

สวัสดีค่ะ ดิฉันชื่อเกล ปอง ดิฉันรู้สึกเป็นเกียรติอย่างมากที่ได้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของนิตยสารสวัสดีอเมริกาฉบับแรกนี้ อย่าคิดว่าอาชีพเดียวที่คุณสามารถทำได้ในอเมริกาคืองานในร้านอาหารไทย ถ้าคุณพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ คุณจะทำงานอะไรก็ได้! ให้โอกาสตัวเองและโปรดอย่าจำกัดความสามารถของคุณแค่สิ่งที่คุณทำได้

ดิฉันขอแนะนำตัวเองสักเล็กน้อย ดิฉันเกิดและเติบโตที่กรุงเทพมหานคร ประเทศไทย ดิฉันเดินทางมาที่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาพร้อมกับพ่อแม่ตอนที่ดิฉันมีอายุได้ 19 ปี งานแรกของฉันคือหัวหน้ากะกลางคืนประจำแผนกรายวันที่ฐานทัพทหาร Fort Belvoir นอกจากนี้ดิฉันยังทำงานเป็นพนักงานเสิร์ฟอาหารนอกเวลาในขณะที่ดิฉันเรียนปริญญาตรี หลังจากที่ดิฉันเรียนจบการศึกษา ดิฉันทำงานให้กับ United Airline ในตำแหน่งพนักงานเช็คอินผู้โดยสาร ดิฉันทำงานให้กับธนาคาร Chevy Chase ในตำแหน่งพนักงานขายอาวุโส เป็นที่ปรึกษาอาวุโสในการรับสมัครนักเรียนเข้าศึกษา ที่มหาวิทยาลัย Strayer

ตอนนี้ดิฉันได้ทำงานในฝันแล้ว ดิฉันมีความภูมิใจและมีความสุขมากกับสิ่งที่ดิฉันทำอยู่ ดิฉันต้องใช้เวลาเล็กน้อยเพื่อให้ได้งานนี้ ดิฉันได้รับงานนี้มาได้อย่างไร เพื่อนของดิฉันแนะนำงานนี้ให้ดิฉันและดิฉันต้องการลองดู ใช่ ในที่สุดดิฉันก็ได้งานนี้มา ดิฉันต้องใช้เวลาเล็กน้อยแต่ดิฉันภูมิใจกับงานนี้มาก ดิฉันต้องทำตามขั้นตอนทั้งหมดเหล่านี้จนในที่สุดดิฉันก็ได้ตำแหน่งนี้มา

งานของดิฉันคือผู้ตรวจสอบประวัติอาวุโส ดิฉันต้องสัมภาษณ์ผู้สมัครมาทำงานกับหน่วยงานของรัฐบาลกลางหรือผู้รับเหมาของรัฐบาลกลางเพื่อรักษาความปลอดภัย หลังจากนั้นดิฉันรายงานประวัติของผู้สมัครหรือผู้รับเหมาไปยังหน่วยงานต่างๆ ดิฉันทำงานให้กับหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ เช่น หน่วยงานต่อต้านการข่าวกรองและความมั่นคง (Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency, DCSA) กระทรวงความมั่นคงแห่งมาตุภูมิสหรัฐ (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, DHS) และหน่วยงานอื่น ๆ ที่ไม่สามารถระบุชื่อได้ หัวเราะออกมาดังๆ และดิฉันเป็นคนไทยคนเดียวในบริษัท ใช่ ดิฉันเป็นคนไทยเพียงคนเดียว และแน่นอน บางคนดูถูกดิฉันเพราะสำเนียงเอเชียของดิฉัน แต่ใครจะสนใจ ฮ่าๆ

มีคนจำนวนมากตั้งคำถามถึงความสามารถในการทำงานของดิฉัน เพราะดิฉันไม่ได้เกิดในสหรัฐอเมริกาและดิฉันเป็นผู้หญิง ความคิดเห็นเหยียดผิวในเชิงลบเหล่านั้นเคยทำให้ดิฉันรำคาญ แต่ตอนนี้ดิฉันไม่รำคาญอีกแล้ว ดิฉันเป็นผู้ตรวจสอบประวัติที่พูดภาษาไทยได้เพียงคนเดียวในบริษัทของดิฉัน และดิฉันรักงานของดิฉัน

ดิฉันจะบอกว่า ให้ทางเลือกกับตัวเองและฝันให้ใหญ่
คุณไม่ต้องกลัวหรือถูกข่มขวัญโดยง่าย
จงไปแสวงหาความฝันของคุณ!
