Some say yes. Others say no. But it’s an intriguing question: Does a rescued dog know it’s been rescued? You’re free to take a side, but I’d like to share my story of Rosco—the reason I believe rescued dogs do know. Rosco, the name I’d later give him, was born on a south Florida puppy farm and sold to a pet store called Cutie Paw—a cross between PetSmart and Tiffany—whose business plan was to simply give designer names to mutts. You’ve heard the names: Schnoodle, Yorkipoo, Cockapoo, Maltipoo, and Aussiedoodle. Rosco was a Chihuahua-Yorkie mix—cleverly rebranded as a Chorkie. The idea was to buy mutts for $50, sell ‘em for $1,000, and people will never notice—the canine version of movie popcorn. It was a fabulous get-rich-quick scheme—with just one problem.
People did notice—and the store closed. But here’s where the story turns that makes Rosco a rescue rather than a discounted designer dog. Rather than finding foster homes, the store owner removed everything from the store—shelves, lights, desks, chairs, cash register—but left the dogs with no food, no water, and no heat. This was a particularly cold December, and temperatures were in the 30s. I had been in the store a couple weeks before with a friend who was shopping for a dog collar, and that’s when I first saw Rosco. We went back a couple weeks later, and that’s when we were shocked to find the dogs were abandoned. Just a slight tap on the glass door, and it started a barking avalanche. I called the ASPCA and other organizations, which all said they had multiple reports and cases against the store—but nothing was being done. So, I parked in front of the store for several hours throughout each day, hoping someone would come by to check on the dogs. Nobody did.
After three days, the owner parked beside me—finally. We walked into the empty store, confronted by the deafening barking of starving dogs. I said I would take the Chorkie, who was confined to a 10-gallon fish aquarium with nothing but soiled newspapers for a bed. She brought Rosco out with her arms fully extended to keep him as far away as possible. I couldn’t figure out if he smelled worse than a dead fish or a live skunk, but either would be a good description. He weighed 2.2 pounds, and most of that was fleas. The owner gave me his paperwork, and he was six weeks behind on his shots. So, while Rosco escaped the dungeon, he was immediately introduced to a dog’s biggest fear—the vet. Not surprisingly, the vet said there’s not one shred of Yorkshire Terrier in him but thought he may be a Miniature Pinscher—a Min-Pin in designer terms. No matter what he was, he got his shots, a spa treatment, and a shopping spree. All went well, until we got to the finishing wardrobe touch—the collar. He was so small that he could slip through an x-small cat collar. We finally found a ferret harness that fit—barely.
Despite the first four rocky months of his life, it instantly changed when he walked through the door of his new home. He held the winning ticket. He now had a soft bed to sleep in, treats to eat, toys to fetch, spring water to drink, and a warm sweater to wear. You could see it in his eyes: He knew he had been rescued. Rescues have a past for comparison, and the only way to say thank you is to give back with an incredibly strong bond that rescue owners know too well. Today, Rosco goes paddleboarding on the intracoastal, sailing on Biscayne Bay, and boating in Key Largo. He weighs seven pounds but has the attitude of a 200-pound Rottweiler. He probably sees himself as a Chiweiler. Hopefully he’s forgotten his past, but I’ll always remember how he affected mine. Together, we’ll have a better future. If you’re looking for a dog, or just a best friend, consider a rescue. They’ll have similar stories—but also extra love to give. You may not know what kind of dog you’re getting, but there’s one thing you will know. You’ll get a remarkable bond—one that can’t be bought at any designer-dog price.
